项目摘要

本研究の目的は、『マハーバーラタ』と『ラ-マ-ヤナ』という古代インドの2大叙事詩の韻律の解明である。両名は2年来、2大叙事詩の韻律解明を行ってきたが、この過程において、インド古典期のもっとも普通の韻律形式であり、2大叙事詩においては9割以上を占めるアヌシュトゥブ(シュローカ)律の変遷を探るうち、アヌシュトゥブが、インド最古の文献『リグ・ヴェーダ』において、ガーヤトリー律から派生したことを示す新事実を発見した。『リグ・ヴェーダ』における生成から、2大叙事詩に至るまでのアヌシュトゥブの展開が、ここに初めて連続的に明らかになったと言え、インド韻律史上の重要事実であるから、本年度はこの発見を学界に報告することとした。その事実は、「韻律パターンの使用頻度」に関わる。パターンを一々数えなから作詩することは不可能であり、作者にとってほぼ無意識の領域に属すると推定される。しかし3行ないし4行から成る1詩の各行によって異なるパターン頻度が認められること、しかもそれが2種の異なる韻律(ガーヤトリーとアヌシュトゥブ)の間でまったく平行することは、熟練した詩作者の心の内にある微妙な韻律観念を映し取るものと言えよう。詩人のこの繊細な感覚には驚きを禁じ得ない。統計的研究は、今後この種の人間精神の精妙な働きを、さらに明らかにしてゆくであろう。またこの例は、古典期の複雑に規程された韻律形式が、本源において、ここに認められるような詩人の半ば無意識的な、柔軟なリズム的感性から発生し、次第に固定化したものであることを明瞭に示しており、インド韻律史的観点からも極めて興味深い。
