Two research, 1. The quality of life for the persons with mental retardation in group homes in community, 2. Survey on parent's opinions on the residential institutions and group homes in community, were accomplished in these two years.The first research on quality of life for persons with mental retardation in group homes was achieved by visiting group homes and hearing from persons with mental retardation themselves. Following problems are found. 1. Sharing a room cause the problem of privacy 2. Poor activity leisure time 3. Lack of positive relationship with persons in community 4. some difficulty in the job situation such as overtime work 5. management of money tend to frugality 6. paucity of opportunity to have a friendship with other sex 7. keeping quietness if he lives his own room 8. difficulty to keep consultant except persons who stay former residences.The second survey was accomplished asking questions by letters. 63.4% of letters were answered. The result of the questionnaire clarified following. 1. to the question of if parent want to leave the child with mental retardation at their brothers and sisters after they could no longer take care of, most parents responded to not favorable mostly because of their brothers have their own lives. 2. for the question of entering residential institutions, 44.5% of parents responded as favorable because of their professional training and guidance and because of no alternative choice. 3. for the group home in community, parents responded they like to send their child with mental retardation if they could live there forever or if they could be cared by kind care staffs.
