視覚皮質third tier visual cortexのうち、背側に位置する3次視覚野(V3)と、その吻側に位置するV3A(accessory third visual area)へ、2次視覚野(V2)のすべてのチトクロームオキシダーゼモジュールから投射していることが明らかになった。したがって、third tier visual cortexは、すべての視覚モダリティの入力を受け、物体視覚と運動視覚の情報処理の調節に重要な役割を担っていると考えられる。
