近年の加速器施設の発展により、「不安定核」と呼ばれる天然には存在しない元素を人工的に合成することが可能となった。通常の不安定核は最低エネルギー状態、つまり温度が完全に冷え切った状態として存在する。本研究では、不安定核であるBe同位体に注目し、その超高温状態における内部構造と反応機構に関する理論的分析を進めた。その結果、この同位体では、2つの^4He原子核を芯として、それらの間で中性子がボンドになる「化学結合様構造」が形成されることが明らかになった。今回の分析では、これまでの予想をはるかに越えた多様な化学結合状態が得られ、更にそれらが^4He+^8He→^6He+^6He反応で強く形成されることを予言した。この理論計算の後、反応確率の測定がフランスGANIL研究所で実際に行われている。
