本研究では、我が国上場企業経営者が公表する当期の業績予想数値(以下、経営者予想)を分析対象とし、経営者予想の特性とその予想に対する市場の反応を分析した。分析結果は従来の認識と異なり、経営者予想は概して楽観的なものであったこと、また楽観的な予想は多年度にわたり継続されていたことが明らかになった。予想形成にあたり経営者は名声、あるいは市場による規律といった要素よりも管理会計的な内部管理に重きを置いている可能性が示唆されている。一方株価は、楽観的な予想を続けてきた企業に対して、相対的に小さな反応を示していた。市場は経営者の楽観的・保守的といった傾向を認識した上で価格形成を行っていたものと思われる。
