本研究は、ギリシア古典期後期からヘレニズム期初期（前386年から前300年）の傭兵市場を対象に、傭兵リクルートの拠点を確定し、傭兵の給与、背景、流動性を、特に雇用者（都市国家や王）と被雇用者（傭兵）との関係性に注目しながら分析することを目的とする。多種多様な結社や組合活動の隆盛は、古典期後期からヘレニズム期、そしてローマ帝政期にかけてのギリシア世界の大きな特徴の一つとしてしばしば言及されるが、本研究は、都市国家の富裕者間の私的な商業パートナー関係を組合という枠組みで捉えた上で、この私的な組合が傭兵市場でどのような役割を果たしたのか、そしてこのような私的な組合の利害は、傭兵を必要とした都市国家や諸王国、そして傭兵自身の利害とどのような関係にあったのかを明らかにする。以上の研究目的にたいし、外国人特別研究員と研究代表者は、2016年度に続き本年度にも国際会議（From the Markets to the Associations: Second International Conference）をおこない、国内外から9名のスピーカーを招聘し、古典期からヘレニズム期までの傭兵を多角的に議論した。本科学研究費でおこなった2回の国際会議の成果は、英文書籍として出版すべく準備を進めている。さらに、外国人特別研究員は、エリス戦争におけるアルカディア人、アカイア人兵士における論文、そして前4世紀小アジアのギリシア都市をめぐる国際関係（傭兵問題を含む）についての論文を著し、前者を国際的な研究雑誌に投稿し（現在審査中）、後者については研究代表者が簡単な解説を付して翻訳し、『関西学院史学』に掲載された。
