本研究の主たる目的は、英語の関係詞の指示機能と接続機能について、発話解釈の観点から分析を行い、語用論的に動機づけられた指示特性と文連結機能を割り出し、それらの背景にある文脈と推論の相互作用を理論的・実証的に解明することによって、関係詞節の発話意図と発話解釈についてのより包括的な説明を与えることである。具体的には、①関係詞の指示機能に関して、類似の指示機能を持つとされる代名詞（it, thatなど）と比較し、それぞれの機能上・語用論上の指示特性を抽出する。②関係詞の連結機能を他の連結語（connectives）と比較し、談話標識（discourse marker）としての特異性を明らかにする。③指示機能と接続機能の２つの機能をあわせ持つということが理論上どのような意味を持つかについて、関連性理論における位置づけという形で実現する。研究初年度となる令和４年度は先行研究を収集・検討するとともに、コーパスを活用してデータを収集し、これらに基づいて、主に会話などの話し言葉に特徴的な非制限的関係詞の指示機能と連結機能に焦点を当てて分析を進め、非制限的関係詞節（Which節）の発話意図と関係詞の指示について検討した。その結果、第１に、関係詞は先行発話を聞いた［述べた］時点で、それをきっかけに新たな想定（結論・疑問・追加情報）が導出されたことを明示する談話標識として機能する特徴があること、第２に、先行発話は単なるきっかけであり、新たな想定の導出は、リアルタイムでの情報処理の中で先行発話と記憶などを含めた話し手の想定との相互作用が関わっており、そのため、時に関係詞と先行詞との指示関係があいまいになること、第３に、談話連結機能と指示のあいまい性という点から、文脈によっては関係詞がit/thatなどの代名詞よりも会話において現れやすいことが確認できた。
