This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary goal of the Core Support activity is the development of state-of-the-art facilities to directly support the RCMI research activities. The secondary goal is to upgrade the infrastructure for biological, biomedical and biotechnological research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The three core facilities are the Molecular Biology Core Facility (MBCF), the Computer Network Support Facility (CNSF), both in the Pacific Biosciences Research Center and the Biostatistics and Data Management Facility (BDMF) in the School of Medicine. Both the molecular and computer facilities were established units, but were in need of expansion to exploit the rapid technological advances in these fields. The biostatistics facility was created in 2004 with RCMI support to meet the growing needs of researchers whose current and potential extramural research support requires expert biostatistical consultation and services. The specific aims of the Molecular Biology Core Facility are 1) to provide efficient and cost-effective DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide synthesis, genotyping, DNA microarray analysis and bioinformatics services, and 2) to develop progressive expertise in emerging research and applied technologies, including structural and functional genomics and proteomics and molecular genetic pathology. The specific aims of the Computer Network Support Facility are 1) to expand network capability to include dedicated research servers and web-based applications for data access by collaborating researchers, and 2) to manage the desktop and laptop computers of individual researchers with hardware, software, security, peripherals and training support. The specific aims of the Biostatistics and Data Management Facility are 1) to provide statistical and data management consultation and services to clinical and basic researchers, initially to those with the RCMI program, and 2) to establish the facility as an ongoing core resource available to all biomedical researchers at UHM.
