This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The goals of this project are to first develop an infrastructure for doing large scale genetic and psychological studies of trauma-related and affective psychiatric illness in the general non-psychiatric population at Grady Hospital, serving the inner-city in Atlanta. The primary aims are to examine the 5HTTLPR and BDNF (Val66Met) alleles as mediators of trauma in the risk for PTSD as well as to examine the frequencies of other psychiatrically related haplotypes in this population.
During the reporting period we have obtained samples from over 600 subjects including salivary dna and detailed phenotype information related to abuse, trauma, depression, and ptsd symptoms. The principal findings detail gene x environment interactions mediating the effects of early childhood abuse on adult depression and of early childhood abuse on PTSD in traumatized adults.
