Our previous studies have suggested that oxidative stress promotes DNA damage and tumorigenesis. Thus, we are continuing to investigate the role of the mitochondria in detoxifying oxygen, the essential substrate for reactive oxygen species generation, by its reduction to inert water. We are also investigating the role of the mitochondria in adaptation to stresses such as exercise or increased afterload in skeletal or cardiac muscle. Insights into these mechanisms that involve inflammation or innate immune signaling via the mitochondria may be helpful for developing new strategies for disease treatment or health maintenance.
