Bioremediation or microbial degradation refers to the breaking down of contaminants by microbes, into less or non-toxic forms. Hence, bioremediation represents an important component in remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. As a consequence, bioremediation has become one of the preferred methods to clean up hydrocarbon and volatile organic compounds at contaminated sites across Canada, and internationally. Hence, among the many ways to manage the impacts of contamination, bioremediation is being widely employed, thus representing an important business opportunity for Canadian bioremediation companies.
