The Cytation 5 Imaging Multi-Mode Reader (C5-IMMR), produced by BioTek, is a state-of-the art fluorescent/luminescent plate reader combined with diverse imaging capabilities that allows for real-time physiological measurements of cells or tissues with simultaneous morphological imaging during biological assays. The C5-IMMR is an affordable and user-friendly platform with multi-mode capabilities, which makes it an attractive instrument for advancing applied and basic animal research and student training in the Department of Animal Bioscience (ABS). ABS research is financially supported by various agriculture sectors and is typically matched by funding through provincial and federal government programs. The ABS faculty is rapidly growing to accommodate student training within our highly successful undergraduate Animal Biology and innovative graduate studies programs. Our graduates are in high demand to fill vacancies in the Canadian Agri-Food and animal health industries; in fact according to a survey conducted by the Ontario Agricultural College there is a shortage of HQP in the large (Ontario) Agri-Food industry. Since we are in the growth phase of graduate training and we are receiving additional stipend funding from the university for new faculty, ABS greatly needs new infrastructure. The purchase of the C5-IMMR, with its highly versatile capabilities, will ensure continued advancements in discovery and innovative research and the training of HQP within our three organizational themes of sustainable and ethical animal production, the production of high quality and value-added animal products, and use of animal models for human metabolism, nutrition and health. Our research within each of these themes contributes directly the growth of the large Canadian Agr-Food industry. In addition to advancing the basic and applied research programs of Drs. Karrow, Squires, Bédécarrats, Cant and Li within ABS, this equipment will also support a wide range of collaborative and innovative animal bioscience research that commonly involves cell and tissue biology.
