Aluminum products are increasingly used in Canada and worldwide in automobiles, aircraft and many otherapplications. One of the key elements in the production of aluminum is Hall-He´roult process, which is themajor industrial process for smelting aluminum. One main problem in this process is the occurrence of fluidinterfacial instabilities within the Hall-He´roult reduction cells, due to gravity waves modified by intenseelectric/magnetic fields. There are many parameters that can affect the stability of the flow, e.g., magnitude ofvarious forces, density difference, fluid layer thicknesses, wall friction coefficient, etc. In this research project,we develop a mathematical modelling approach to analyze the flow stability to finally predict and preventinterfacial instabilities that may occur in Hall-He´roult reduction cells.
