The proposed research focuses on the design and development of a wind-measuring device (i.e., anemometer)**that can be mounted on Rotary-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (RWUAV) for temporal and spatial**measurement of wind speed/direction. A challenging research problem is to derive mathematical and prediction**models on the aerodynamic forces due to the rotation of the propellers called "prop wash" and their effects on**the anemometer measurements and verification of the model via experiments conducted in a controlled**environment. This project is a collaboration with INDRO Robotics in BC, Canada. For the first time, a**comprehensive mathematical model of the interaction between the aerodynamically-induced forces generated**due to transnational/rotational motion of the RWUAV along with the rotational speed of propellers and an**anemometer attached to the RWUAV will be studied. This research results in developing a software suite that**can be used for calculating the wind speed/direction at high rate and high spatial resolution for an anemometer**attached to a generic RWUAV.
