Sheridan College's Screen Industries Research and Training center will work with partner Avara Media Inc. to design and prototype a software system to allow non-speaking persons to communicate more effectively. The system will utilize a smart-glasses platform to present an interface enabling users to select communicationoptions in a simple and context-aware manner. These communication options can then be presented to others using pre-existing speech synthesis services. The main output of this project will be a prototype of a combined hardware/software system which is more comfortable, affordable, and responsive than other availableaugmentative alternative communication devices. The successful completion of this project will enable Avara Media to develop more effective AR communication interfaces, and open up new business opportunities in the area of assistive communication. Non-speaking persons, such as those with Cerebral Palsy, Autism,Stroke/Aphasia, and ALS, as well as their caregivers, friends, and family will also benefit greatly from having access to more effective assistive communication devices.
