本研究では、ICTの活用について更なる工夫を試み、児童が真のコミュニケーションを体得できるような単元及び教材開発を試みた。具体的にはこれまで行ってきた交流活動をより児童が主体的にできるようにするために、やりとりに重点を置いた内容とした。実際には、外国語活動において、本校(富浦小)と台湾の台中市立清水国民小学の6学年の児童が、SKYPEを用いて交流する活動を行った。両校は、昨年度から自国の文化や学校生活などを紹介する交流活動を行ってきた。今回は、これまで行ってきた一方が発表し、他方がそれを見聞きするという形式から、自作のクイズを出し、答えをもらいながら進めるという流れにした。一問一答する中で言葉でのやりとりはもとより、表情やジェスチャー等のノンバーバルな表現も活用しながらの即時的な交流が行うことができた。本活動では、表現や伝え方が適当かどうかを児童も指導者も即時的に評価することができた。課題であった聞きとれない時の聞き返し方やコンピュータ接続システムの状況によりSKYPEの接続が難しくなった際の教員の支援や補助の仕方について、いくつかの方策を試みることができた。たとえば、聞き返しの定型文を練習し、使えるようにする、ジェスチャーやフリップ等で今の状況を伝える、指導者が予めメールで活動の内容を交換しておき、電話で伝えながら進める等である。その内容については、精選の余地があるが、児童も教員も臆せずに交流活動を進めることができた。本研究をとおして、児童は自分の発表に自信をもち、友達のよさを認める姿勢が育ち、次の活動への「態度の積み上げ効果」を見ることができた。台中市の小学生と英語を使って、即時的に交流を図ることにより、児童は英語を話すことでコミュニケーションできる喜びを体感していた。今後は、交流校の開発やSKYPEの活用の工夫とともに児童の英語活用力を含めて、より幅広い活動ができるように研究を進めていきたい。
