Final Studies for the Completion of a Comprehersive Grammar of West Frisian-Toward a Typology of the Gremanic Languages

The primary aim of this research has been to complete a comprehensive grammar of modern West Frisian (Westerlauwersk Frysk) spoken mainly in the province of Friesland in the northern part of the Netherlands. Special attention has been paid to the contrastive aspects of the standard West Frisian grammatical structure with those of its cognates in order to give a solide basis for the ultimate purpose of the researcher to establish a holistic typology of the Germanic languages. The grammar of West Frisian completed by the researcher, which was accepted as his doctoral dissertation by Hokkaido University in Sapporo/Japan in december 2003 and thoroughly revised at the end of 2004, is indeed the largest and most update one in the whole world, taking into consideration almost all the crucial academic results gained from the linguistic studies on Frisian. His work is also to be regarded as an important contribution to the better understanding of the current situation of Europe where the optimal policy of the minority languages and their speakers has become one of the most urgent tasks within the European Union.
