To explore the feasibility of using lactoferrin (LF) as a carrier for oral delivery of biopharmaceuticals, we have prepared the human recombinant G-CSF conjugated to human LF (hLF). LF-G-CSF conjugates were taken up by intestinal Caco-2 cells, although G-CSF was not, suggesting the possible use of LF as a carrier in oral delivery. Oral administration of LF-G-CSF conjugates in mice, however, did not demonstrate a pharmacological effect on the increase of absolute neutrophil counts.
