This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The human visual system shares much in common with that of other primates, which has led to the widespread use of macaque monkeys as models of the human visual system. Nevertheless, species also vary in their visual system organization, although few attempts have been made to rigorously document the ways in which humans differ from, as well as resemble, other primates. This project uses histological staining techniques to compare neuronal phenotypes and microscopic tissue organization in the visual cortex and thalamus humans, chimpanzees (the animals to which humans are most closely related), and other primates.
