Polarization Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography (PS-OCT) is being evaluated as a potential diagnostic tool for the evaluation of degenerative joint disease, by examining alterations in tissue birefringence in articular cartilage specimens. Tissue birefringence is influenced by both the material composition of the tissue and its orgainization and orientation in relation to the optical axis. Non-linear optical microscopy is being used to describe the organization and orientation of collagen fibers in articular cartilage specimens imaged by PS-OCT in order to better interpret the phase retardation images obtained from articular cartilage specimens.
