EFFECTS OF ANOREXIA NERVOSA ON PEAK BONE MASS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa are at increased risk for low bone density, and no treatment has thus far been documented as successful in improving bone mass in this population. We are recruiting adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa 13-18 years old, as well as healthy, normal weight girls of the same age range, to determine whether administration of low doses of estrogen leads to an improvement in bone density in anorexia nervosa. This is an 18-month long double blind placebo-controlled research study with a total of 11 hospital visits for qualifying subjects. There are four overnight visits, which include bone density and hormonal evaluations.
