Conséquence d'une interaction complexe entre plusieurs paramètres liés à l'individu et à son environnement, l'un des facteurs majeurs liés aux chutes et à la perte d'équilibre est la proprioceptivité. Celle-ci étant rendu possible par les innombrables récepteurs nerveux présents dans le corps, une diminution de cette faculté peut subvenir avec la vieillesse. En utilisant la communication interne de notre système nerveux, il est cependant possible d'emprunter le chemin inverse et d'altérer les informations sensorielles perçues par la surface plantaire du pied pour forcer une réponse spécifique du corps et ainsi améliorer la posture et l'équilibre.
