The coverage of sparsely populated rural areas as well as the deployment of new generations of telecommunications (4G, 5G) require the deployment of an increasing number of autonomous energy telecommunication towers. Usually powered by diesel generators, these towers contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases and therefore to the degradation of the environment. Even if renewable energy supply solutions exist for areas with strong sunlight, they are not currently used in Quebec. As part of this research project, we propose to optimize the design and control of hybrid solutions (renewable energy / diesel) for powering autonomous telecommunication stations to minimize the use of liquid fuels of fossil origin. The research will be based on numerical models, which will be validated by experiments on a model station installed in the solar park of the Université de Sherbrooke. Simple then advanced algorithms for controlling the energy system validated on the model station will then be deployed in a full-size station operated by Bell in Abitibi park. This research will allow the Quebec company STACE to offer optimized energy solutions for telecommunications base stations, in particular for the Quebec climate. The Bell company will be able to optimize the operation of its Abitibi station and thus reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. These solutions can then be deployed in new base stations, or to retrofit existing stations, thereby further reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and its ecological footprint.
