As the Internet of Things promises a proliferation in the number of distributed and unsupervised mobile computing devices, lightweight device authentication protocols for counterfeit prevention and secure communication becomes paramount. Physically unclonable function (PUF) primitives have recently been proposed as a means for replacing non-volatile memories (which are prone to physical attacks) for generating and storing cryptographic keys for security-based functions. This research proposal addresses the reliability issues involved in designing a static random access memory (SRAM)-based PUF circuit block, and then integrates it into an authentication circuit for use in a hardware-based security subsystems. The key research objectives of this proposal are: (i) the design of an SRAM-based PUF primitive, (ii) the development of design methodologies to mitigate the impact of process, voltage, and temperature induced variability - issues more prevalent in nanoscale CMOS technologies, and (iii) the realization of the SRAM PUF primitive in a low-overhead device authentication system.
