本研究は、モバイル・インターネットGISである携帯電話GISについて、地理教育における有用性を活用方策とともに解明することを目的とした。このため、(1)「地理教育における携帯電話GISの活用領域の解明」、(2)「地理教育用の携帯電話GISの仕様検討と開発」、(3)「実際の地理教育現場における携帯電話GISの試行」を、過去三力年の研究期間内に進めてきた。平成19年度は研究期間の最終年度として、(3)「地理教育現場における携帯電話GISの試行」を主な課題として取り組み、それを通じて、携帯電話GIS活用の有用性と今度の課題についてとりまとめを行った。すなわち、地理教育現場における携帯電話GISの試行は、前年度までは主に大学教育を対象に行ってきたことから、本年度は初等教育(中学校・高等学校)の授業現場を対象に実施した。市街地中心部の商店街調査や縁辺部の農業的土地利用調査など、野外調査(フィールドワーク)を伴う授業に携帯電話GISを適用した。その結果、携帯電話GISの活用は、生徒にとっては興味関心を刺激し、調査へのモチベーションを高めること、教師側にとっては調査結果の整理が不要など負担軽減にっながることなどが明らかになった。大学教育への適用の場合、現地での調査計画の立案や変更を容易にする点が、既に前年度までに注目されており、これらをあわせると、携帯電話GISほ教育の効果と効率を格段に向上させる有用なツールとして評価することができる。反面、とりわけ中学校以下の教育に対する携帯電話GISの適用に際しては、携帯電話やインターネット利用のモラルを含めたリテラシー教育を事前に行う必要があること、また、大学教育を含めて、小さな携帯電話端末でも操作が容易なインターフェースの開発と、識別しやすい地図の整備は今後とも課題になると判断された。
