角膜上皮は、角膜表層でバリアーとして重要な働きをしている。これまで継代可能な角膜上皮細胞には正常なGap Junction(GJ)が存在せず、細胞-細胞間での分子の交換がなされていない。つまり、統合的な分化形質を保持した培養角膜上皮細胞は、未だ存在しないことを示唆している。そこで、GJ構成分子の一つであるコネキシン43に着目し、正常なGJ機能を有し,角膜上皮分子マーカーの発現を維持した Human コネキシン43安定発現角膜上皮細胞株の樹立に成功した。
