This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The major goal of this R24 grant, National Neurological AIDS Bank (NNAB), is to provide well-characterized human tissue, fluids, and medical data from subjects with advanced AIDS and seronegative comparison subjects with other diseases. Subjects are recruited and followed longitudinally during life, with standardized and quality-controlled examinations that include a neuromedical examination, neuropsychological testing, psychiatric/substance abuse/toxicological testing, blood, urine, and CSF collection every 6 months. An algorthymic approach is followed to achive a series of neuromedical diagnoses based on the AAN criteria. Subjects give pre-mortem consent to a rapid autopsy after death. A standardized neuropathological protocol is followed to cut, prepare, and store tissue, and to establish a series of standardized neuropathological diagnoses. Systemic tissue is prepared similarly. Post-mortem fluids, formalin-fixed, and frozen tissue is available at no cost (except for shipping) to qualified researchers who submit protocols for review to our Steering Committee. Although not a part of the original RFA, NNAB has established several add-on protocols in the area of Hepatitis C co-infection, clinical studies, and neuroimaging to the original protocol, and we look forward to taking full advantage of this cohort.
