Instrumentation will be purchased for the characterization of wireless and fiberoptic integrated circuits communicating at enormous data rates of 300 gigabit to 1 terabit per second per carrier/wavelength. The equipment, covering the 75-320 GHz frequency bands, will be unique in Canada and consists of a set of broadband second harmonic downconverters and signal sources which will permit, for the first time, the precise characterization of the output signal constellation of communication transmitters operating more than 1000 times faster than those in today's most adavanced LTE smartphones and tablet computers. It will enable the applicant, his graduate students, other professors in the Electronics and Photonics Groups at U of T, as well as their Canadian and international academic and industrial partners, to conduct fundamental and applied research on the architecture, theoretical limits, design, fabrication, and characterization of exploratory high efficiency wireless and fiberoptic transmitters for a new generation of broadband mobile and last mile links with unprecedented bandwidths. These circuits and systems-on-chip will revolutionize communication links in datacenters and in the mobile cloud. The requested infrastructure will be used for the training of the next generation of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs, and will act as an incubator for novel product ideas and future start-up companies. During the next 5-10 years, the revolutionary research enabled by this infrastructure will help to curb the severe increase in power consumption in data centres and base stations, transform the way in which we work, communicate with each other, deliver health care and community services, spend our leisure time, ultimately, the way we live. It will sustain and reinforce Canada's leadership in wireless and fiberoptic communications.
