本研究は、幕末維新期に於ける国学者の庶民教化思想、および社会的活動の歴史的研究を解明することを目的とした。従来、国学者の教化思想の分析には、「民心掌握の武器」や「愚民観的思考」に基づくものであるといった評価がなされてきたといってよい。本研究では、所謂「国学の四大人」に代表される頂点的国学者を中心とした先行研究による思想分析の蓄積を踏まえるとともに、国学者研究にとってもう1つの重要な支柱でもある地方における国学の展開に焦点をあて、人物交流や地域での諸活動の解明を試みた。まず、幕末の国学者大国隆正と莫逆の契りを結んだとされる上田及淵の事蹟の究明を行った。その中で及淵が、和気清麿・児島高徳・楠正行といった岡山県に深い縁を持つ史上の偉人の霊社創建に先立ち、祭神の考証や霊魂そのものへの位置づけ等を、岡山県での調査や国立公文書館に所蔵される『公文録』を援用して、明らかに出来たものと考える。これは、近代初頭の神祇行政に国学者が如何に関わりを持ったのかを理解することにも繋がる。また、地方での教化を基軸に据えていた大国の門人獲得の事例を浮き彫りにし、さらには大国と及淵との学説にみられる近似性には、今後も国学史上において大国が如何なる活動を地域で展開し影響を齎したのか、といった学統(学脈)解明の布石となろう。また、山口県下関市に鎮座する赤間神宮が、明治8年に官幣中社・赤間宮となるまでの過程を、教部省と県当局との間で取り交わされた関係文書の分析を行ない解明を試みた。赤間宮のみならず、近代初頭の神宮・神社創建は単なる行政措置の一環としてではなく、祭神の特色や祭祀の在り様といった歴史性に根付いた問題を孕んでおり、その営みに国学者が深く関わりを持っていたことも指摘できたと考える。このほか、島根・高知などの国学者についても考察対象とし、資料の蒐集に従事した。以上が平成18年度の研究実績の概要である。

It is a link between administrative measures and the characteristics of sacrifices to gods. It is a historical issue. It is a matter of deep concern to scholars. This is the first time that a scholar has investigated the subject and collected data. The above is a summary of research results for the year 2018.
