ABSTRACT
Support is requested for a Keystone Symposia conference entitled Inter Organ Crosstalk in Non-Alcoholic
Steatohepatitis (NASH), organized by Drs. Greg Steinberg, Camilla Charlotte Schéele and Saswata Talukdar.
The conference will be held in Keystone, Colorado from February 6-9, 2022.
The epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes are driving the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
(NASH) which is rapidly accelerating rates of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellar carcinoma (HCC). NASH is
characterized by complex crosstalk between different cell types and organ systems that leads to steatosis,
inflammation and fibrosis. This intracellular communication involves multiple cells types within the
microenvironment (e.g., stellate cells, macrophages, T cells and hepatocytes) but also includes interactions
with multiple organ systems (e.g., gut microbiome, brown/beige/white adipose tissue and muscle). With the
development of many new technological advances (e.g., proteomics, single cell RNAseq, and organoids), our
understanding of these intricate signaling pathways is rapidly expanding. The conference will bring scientists
across different disciplines together to provide a forum for sharing rapidly emerging methodological advances
in order to understand the mechanisms by which cells and organ systems communicate, in order to develop
new paradigms and therapeutic strategies for the treatment of NASH. Given the importance of adipose tissue
as a critical storage depot, an endocrine organ, and a regulator of energy expenditure, this conference will be
held jointly with the Keystone Symposia meeting Adipose Tissue and Metabolic Health in order to expand
opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions.
