MACROMOLECULAR CRYSTALLOGRAPHY REMOTE ACCESS COMMISSIONING

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Remote access tools have been developed and implemented that allow users to control experiments on SSRL¿¿s macromolecular crystallography beam lines from remote locations. Initial commissioning of the remote data collection mode was carried out with The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). During the commissioning phase, NIAID members on a site visit at TSRI in San Diego observed the remote screening of ~150 SARS-related protein crystals on BL11-1. Also, a group in Australia (Carr) screened crystals and collected several MAD data sets using BL9-2. Other groups that participated in the commissioning phase during their scheduled beam time included Kornberg (Stanford University), Chan (Ohio State), Bjorkman and Rees (California Institute of Technology), Tsai (UC Irvine), Stevens (The Scripps Research Institute) and Hol (University of Washington). In all, 11 scheduled runs were carried out in a completely remote fashion. Feedback obtained from the users during the commissioning phase has lead to improvements in the overall remote access experience.
