MACROMOLECULAR CRYSTALLOGRAPHY REMOTE ACCESS WORKSHOP

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A workshop on remote access of macromolecular crystallography beam lines was held on October 19, 2005 in conjunction with the Annual SSRL Users' Meeting. The aim of the workshop was to provide the participants with an overview of the latest tools for remote experimentation and to use the tools to conduct remote experiments. SSRL now provides remote access tools that allow experimenters to screen samples and collect crystallographic data from remote locations. The system makes use of high capacity sample cassettes and robotic mounting systems (SAM) implemented on the macromolecular crystallography beam lines. The workshop was divided into talks and practical sessions. In the first session the remote access mode of data collection was described in detail. Participants then received hands-on-training on the implementation and usage of the remote access tools. The workshop was extremely successful as all participants were able to configure their personal laptops to operate the crystallography beam lines remotely. They were able to conduct remote screening experiments and use Web-Ice to score and index the images for subsequent data collection.
