The Center for Biologic Imaging is a central imaging facility and was formed in 1991 when the Director, Dr. Simon Watkins, was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh to build and develop the core. During the last 16 years it has become an essential and vital research facility for the University of Pittsburgh; Dr Watkins has formed close collaborative relationships with researchers who have been able to integrate current imaging methodologies into their research through the CBI. He has also developed several tools directed towards the goals of this project, specifically, tools that allow high speed 3-D analyses of small particles in living cells.
