This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Obesity is now considered a worldwide epidemic that is caused by consuming calorically dense diets and a lack of proper exercise. In the past decade there have been numerous novel systems that have been discovered that are involved in the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure. Pharmaceuticals that target these systems may be useful therapeutics for the treatment of obesity and/or diabetes. This study had the simple goal to determine the pharmacokinetics and tolerability study for a novel Merck compound. For this study we used 6 rhesus macaques that were maintained on chronic i.v. catheters using the swivel tether system.
